Relive in amazing Greece

It’s a place where the Mediterranean Sea meets mediaeval ruins, volcanic cliffs, and friendly folks. Visitors are drawn to the city because of the white-washed towns and turquoise canals. The most memorable moment, however, is when you break through the shade of the pine trees and discover that hidden cove you’ve been searching for. In the crystal clear water, look for colourful fish, turtles, and dolphins. For the rest of your life, Greece will be coupled with sand, salt, and sunshine.

Do’s

  1. Accept two kisses on the cheek as a greeting. This is a common greeting that is done in a more personal context, as it is in many regions of Europe. Handshakes aren’t as common as they formerly were.
  2. Learn about the many modes of public transit. It’s a good idea to plan ahead of time how you’ll get around in the location you’ll be visiting. In Athens, for example, the metro is the simplest and most convenient mode of transportation.
  3. Find out where to eat in Athens by doing some research.   Just don’t show up at 6, 7, or even 8 p.m. for dinner. Athenians enjoy eating late, and restaurant kitchens are open long past midnight.
  4. Apply sunscreen liberally. Pale skin has been known to turn hot pink even on a very sunny winter day. No matter how much you want to flaunt your golden glow to your friends back home, you’ll need your SPF from April until late October.

Dont’s

  1. Don’t put your palm in front of someone’s face; it’s a highly disrespectful gesture, so don’t even do it playfully!
  2. Don’t get into a cab without first asking how much it will cost. While the majority of Greeks are honest, some may try to take advantage of your status as a tourist; always ensure that the metre is on and confirm the charge with the driver ahead of time. Keep in mind that cab fares are doubled at night.
  3. Carry no travellers’ cheques or personal checks with you, as they are obsolete and not accepted in Greece.
  4. Avoid going grocery shopping on Sundays, as most supermarkets and even some markets are closed on Sundays. You’ll be able to find one here and there, but it’ll be more difficult and you’ll have to spend a little more.
